In addition to academics and research, the school serves the state through a variety of continuing education programs for high school students through professionals. The school also sponsors several public lectures throughout the year.

Special academic programs include the Carolina Business News Initiative, Carolina Community Media Project, Medical and Science Journalism Program, Sports Communication, Interdisciplinary Health Communication and the M.A. / J.D. Dual Degree Program.
